Module 1- Childcare Training
Lesson 1: Development: In Utero and Birth
In this lesson the student will understand the development that takes place in utero and how it helps to prepare a baby for life outside the womb. The student will gain a clear understanding of neurological, physiological, and physical development of a baby during their time in utero and in the moments after they are born.
Lesson 2: Neonatal Development
In this lesson the student will identify the key characteristics of the newborn child. The student will be able to understand and describe the changes that occur from birth until the 4th week of postnatal life. This lesson will aim to describe the neurological, physiological, and physical development of the neonate. By the end of the lesson, the student will also be able to recognise the various characteristics of a healthy neonate.
Lesson 3: Development: 0-3 Months
In this lesson the student will explore the various areas of development of the zero to three month old baby. They will extend their knowledge of gross motor , fine motor, language, emotional, and cognitive development. By the end of this lesson they will be able to interpret how these areas of development will help prepare a baby for the next phase of development.
Lesson 4: Development: 4-6 months
In this lesson the student will explore the various areas of development of the four to six month old baby. They will extend their knowledge of gross motor , fine motor, language, emotional, and cognitive development. By the end of this lesson they will be able to compare the advances made between birth and six months of age.
Lesson 5: Stimulation: Birth to Six Months
In this lesson the student will learn how we can stimulate the various areas of development with toys and objects. The students will learn how to select the appropriate stimulation techniques and modalities according to the need of the child. By the end of this lesson the student will be able to evaluate the effectiveness of the modality with regards to the need of the child.
Lesson 6: Development: 7-9 months
In this lesson the student will explore the various areas of development of the seven to nine month old baby. They will extend their knowledge of gross motor , fine motor, language, emotional, and cognitive development. By the end of this lesson they will be able to summarise the progress of each developmental area.
Lesson 7: Development: 10-12 Months
In this lesson the student will explore the various areas of development of the ten to twelve month old baby. They will extend their knowledge of gross motor , fine motor, language, emotional, and cognitive development. By the end of this lesson they will be able to combine their knowledge of the various areas of development to hypothesise as to their importance in the first year of life.
Lesson 8: Stimulation: 6-12 Months
In this lesson the student will learn how we can stimulate the various areas of development with toys and objects. The students will learn how to select the appropriate stimulation techniques and modalities according to the need of the child. By the end of this lesson the student will be able to modify their approach or modality to suit the needs of the play and child.
Module 2- Childcare Training
Lesson 1: Development: 12-15 Months
In this lesson the student will explore the various areas of development of the 12 to 15 month old baby. They will extend their knowledge of gross motor , fine motor, language, emotional, cognitive, and functional development. By the end of this lesson they will be able to demonstrate how the various areas of development are used together to facilitate the development of activities of daily living.
Lesson 2: Development: 15-18 Months
In this lesson the student will explore the various areas of development of the 15 to 18 month old baby. They will extend their knowledge of gross motor , fine motor, language, emotional, cognitive, and functional development. By the end of this lesson they will be able to discuss the impact of the various areas of development on one another.
Lesson 3: Stimulation: 12-18 Months
In this lesson the student will learn how to use techniques, modalities, and activities to stimulate age-appropriate development of this specific age group. They will learn how to prioritise which areas need more stimulation and be able to select the appropriate methods to aid in stimulation.
Lesson 4: Development: 18-24 months
In this lesson the student will explore the various areas of development of the 18 to 24 month old baby. They will extend their knowledge of gross motor , fine motor, language, emotional, cognitive, and functional development. By the end of this lesson they will be able to compare the progress made within develop from 12 to 20 months.
Lesson 5: Stimulation: 18-24 Months
In this lesson the student will learn how to use techniques, modalities, and activities to stimulate age-appropriate development of this specific age group. They will be able to design and create their own play toys and play methods to suit the needs of the two year-old.
Lesson 6: Atypical development: 0-2 years
In this lesson the student will be introduced to atypical development that might come to the fore during the second year of life. The student will learn to identify and understand the various forms of atypical development in terms of their etiology, symptoms, and implications. By the end of this lesson the student will be able to anticipate the effect of atypical development on milestones and norms.
Lesson 7: Atypical development: 0-2 years
In this lesson the student will be introduced to atypical development that might come to the fore during the second year of life. The student will learn to identify and understand the various forms of atypical development in terms of their etiology, symptoms, and implications. By the end of this lesson the student will be able to anticipate the effect of atypical development on milestones and norms.
Lesson 8: Case Study Learning
In this lesson the student will use all the knowledge that they have accumulated over the past two modules. In this lesson, students will be presented with case studies and scenarios and be challenged to identify key areas that need intervention. In addition to this, they will be asked to describe how they will plan and produce intervention strategies.
Module 3- Childcare Training
Lesson 1: Development: 2 – 2 1/2 years, Part 1
In this lesson the student will explore the various areas of development of the 2 to 2 1/2 year-old child. They will extend their knowledge of gross motor, fine motor, and language development. By the end of this lesson they will be able to list the various advances made in development during this timeframe.
Lesson 2: Development: 2 – 2 1/2 years, Part 2
In this lesson the student will explore the various areas of development of the 2 to 2 1/2 year-old child. They will extend their knowledge of emotional, cognitive, and functional development. By the end of this lesson they will be able to paraphrase how various areas of development influence each other.
Lesson 3: Stimulation: 2- 2 1/2 years
In this lesson the student will learn how to use techniques, modalities, and activities to stimulate age-appropriate development of this specific age group. They will learn how to prioritise which areas need more stimulation and be able to select the appropriate methods to aid in stimulation.
Lesson 4: Development: 2 1/2-3 years, Part 1
In this lesson the student will explore the various areas of development of the 2 1/2 to 3 year-old child. They will extend their knowledge of gross motor , fine motor, and language development. By the end of this lesson they will be able to analyse the effect of development on functional skills.
Lesson 5: Development: 2 1/2-3 years, Part 2
In this lesson the student will explore the various areas of development of the 2 1/2 to 3 year-old child. They will extend their knowledge of emotional, cognitive, and functional development. By the end of this lesson they will be able to measure current skills of a child against age-appropriate milestones.
Lesson 6: Stimulation: 2 1/2-3 years
In this lesson the student will learn how to use techniques, modalities, and activities to stimulate age-appropriate development of this specific age group. They will be able to design and create their own play toys and play methods to suit the needs of the two year-old.
Lesson 7: Atypical Development: 2-3 years
In this lesson the student will expand their knowledge on atypical development that might come to the fore during the third year of life. The student will learn to identify and understand the various forms of atypical development in terms of their etiology, symptoms, and implications. Lesson 8: Threenagers
In this lesson the student will learn how the identity of the three-year-old child develops and how it affects those around them. They will be able to identify and address challenges of this age group and be able to plan how to prevent challenges.
