Module 1- Technical Drawing

Lesson 1: Introduction to technical drawing

Kick start your technical drawing journey as we dive into everything you need to know about the basics of technical drawing. The first lesson is to provide a holistic understanding of all the industries that use Technical drawing in their everyday lives. We cover the skills and amazing possibilities that this course will open up for you. We also take a look at the career opportunities out there for you after having completed this course. We look at the practical side of technical drawing before diving into looking at the computer-aided software programs such as CAD, REVIT and 3D sketch up that you will use on your journey. Before we end off the lesson we Challenge – Next lesson

Lesson 2: Gathering the tools

Communication is key in the interior design, architectural and engineering professions and this is where we begin. Communication develops through drawings and thus we have our technical drawings so we investigate the expectations when it comes to creating your technical drawings. We look at the communication tools in a holistic view as we touch on drawings tools such as section views drawing schedules, assembly drawing and many more. Without our drawing tools we wouldn’t be able to create our drawings, so before we end off the lesson we break up the tools that we use for manual and CAD drafting.

Lesson 3: Start with a line

What may seem like an incredibly simple concept, in fact, plays a huge role in how we read technical drawings – A simple line is a foundation to our drawings and therefore we cannot underestimate the topic of line types and line weights as they are equally of huge importance when creating your technical drawings, in fact, they can make or break your drawing. This is where we start our lesson 3. We look at everything to do with drawing line types and investigate the meaning of line weights. We look at how these elements provide great insight into your drawings. Once we have laid the foundation, we will show you how to create your very own line weight style and template for all your drawings going forward.

Lesson 4: An evolution of technical drawing

Drafting is one of the oldest documented profession. Did you know that the earliest site of drawing was found on cave walls? A very exciting lesson as we journey through the evolution of drafting and the development of technical drawing. We investigate the development of technical drawings as we start to see the development of drawing standards and the creation of drawing tools. An extremely important lesson and one not to be missed.

Lesson 5: The title block

Setting up your drawing is the foundation to your technical drawing – Without a title block and the relevant information added to your technical drawing your drawings are incomplete. In today’s lesson, we learn everything we need to about the title block, what information needs to appear on the title block and how to create your own title block template by hand. On the topic of creating manual drawings we also took a deeper look at the importance of freehand sketching your preliminary ideas and concepts as we take a practical approach investigating a concept. This is an important lesson which is going to assist you in developing an idea and then setting up your title block to present your idea.

Lesson 6: Getting creative with shape

Shapes are the foundation and starting point to your technical drafting journey. Shape is imperative to construction and drawing development. In this lesson, you will learn the ins and outs of various geometric shape as well as the importance of shape in technical drafting.

Lesson 7: The technique of geometric construction

Shape has the ability to transform your technical drawings. In this lesson, we build on from lesson 6 as we start the process of geometric construction. In this lesson, you will learn the ins and outs of geometric construction of various shapes, such as the circle, line and angle as we use board drafting techniques to develop the concept of geometric construction.

Lesson 8: ABC of annotation

Adding detail to your drawing in the form of annotation is what we are all about in this lesson. We look at what the annotation is and various forms of annotation before we tackle annotation text on your drawings. Some of the areas we focus on are annotation text and style as well as the general methodology surrounding annotating your technical drawings. We end the lesson off by developing your own annotative style as we take the lesson on a practical journey.

Module 2- Technical Drawing

Lesson 1: The in’s and out’s of Loci

Did you know that the Locus of a point is the path traced by a point as it moves in accordance with set conditions and constraints? Well do not fear, this is exactly what we are going to look at in today’s lesson – Loci and what it has to do with your technical drafting. Before coming to the end of the lesson we look at how to apply loci to a drawing by hand. This lesson is very technical and one that is guaranteed to get your technical juices flowing.

Lesson 2: Lets get projecting

We kick start our module 2 as we look at the theory around projection and preparation of your projection drawings. We navigate geometric construction as we apply them to our various projection methods. In this lesson, we cover orthographic projection, Multi-view projection and the difference between the first and third angle projection. A very exciting lesson so come prepared.

Lesson 3: Stepping into the perspective

A perspective view can often be a vital component to a technical, construction or manufacturing drawing. Perspective views often hold key information for completing the drawing pack. This is where today’s lesson starts off, everything about the perspective views and the types of perspective views that we come across such as your 1 point, 2 points and 3 point perspective views. We take this lesson to a practical point as we learn to create our very own 1 point and 2 point perspective drawings by hand.

Lesson 4: Developing the surface

We start off by understanding what the development of a surface means to technical drawing as well as the importance of developing a surface. We tap into parallel line development, radial line development and triangulation development. Before finishing off we create some of our very own surface development drawings.

Lesson 5: The blueprint

This lesson is all about starting to set up your technical drawing with some of the drawing techniques that we have covered in our previous lessons. We start off by looking into the blueprint – the foundation for any manufacturing or construction of anything. From here we look into the plan elevation and section drawings before breaking them up into bite-size building blocks. This lesson is sure to leave your technical geek wanting more.

Lesson 6: The elevation

Part 2 of our blueprint lesson we spring off the basics learnt in the previous lesson as we move straight into the elevation drawing views. In this lesson, we are going to focus on what the elevation views is, how they are relevant to your technical drawing and the importance of the information shown on an elevation drawing. Elevation drawings are vital for showing heights and finishing features to facades of building, objects and projects, with that understanding we tackle some important terminology in an elevation drawing and use that to create our very own elevations of a space we work, live or play in. Bring your sketchbooks along for this one.

Lesson 7: The section

Jumping into part 3 of our blueprints we kick off this lesson by tackling the section view or section drawing. We start off by focusing our attention on what section views are as well as what they look like in your technical drawings. From here we look at the purpose of a technical drawing and their relation to the plan drawing with a strong focus on multi-view projection. We then touch on the various section drawing views that one would expect to come across and make use of in your technical drawing pack. The lesson is ended off by a tutorial on how to set up your very own section view and drawing by hand. Another practical lesson – So be sure to bring along your sketchbooks.

Lesson 8: Getting to grips with scale and measurement

Scale is a vital foundation for any drawing but especially when it comes to our technical drawings. The scale allows us to understand drawings to be able to manufacture the products in reality. Scaling is a drawing method used to enlarge or reduce a drawing in size and this is where our lesson begins. We tackle everything to do with scale and creating drawings to scale. Then we take a peek into dimensions as they are vital to any drawing. They provide incite and detail to the manufacturer, contractor or creator for your projects. In this lesson, we look at everything you need to know about dimensions as well as the various dimension styles. We make this lesson a practical one, as we start to dimension up our own drawings, which will form apart of your final portfolio.
